Indonesia Travel Bucket List

One more month to go before 2015 will be officially over. Talking about how time flies! I didn’t do much traveling this year sadly, but in return — I have listed down few places in-country that I would like to visit next. Wish I could go to all these places in 2016. If it’s not the case, then one way or another I’m going checked mark all these destinations from my bucket list one day. *finger crossed*

Taman Nasional Komodo

Walking among the dinosaur a.k.a the Komodo, perhaps? It’s getting harder to get a glimpse look of this animal they say, but hey, who knows I could be one of those lucky people? Aside from the Komodo, it’s the amazing landscape that actually pulls me to visit this place.

Bali

I’ve been here countless times, but there always new places to visit and explore. Or maybe it’s just me who seems can’t get enough of this island of Gods? Because it’s like a never ending story between me and this beautiful island that I like to call as my home away from home. So although I haven’t make any real plan of where I’m going next year, but Bali is the first place that I already put on my list.

Jogjakarta

Or known as the “Gudeg city” (a traditional Javanese cuisine). I’ve been to Jogja before, but this place below is like the most Instagramer place nowadays, which of course make me curious to see how does it really feels to sit on the deck board and looking down.

Derawan Islands

Swimming with the jellyfish has been in my bucket list of things to do and there are only three places in this world where you could find the stingless jellyfish. So it’s one of the rare things you could do. Well aside from that you could also swim with the whale shark, and manta, and maybe the turtles too?

The DEN of Kalaha

The DEN hasn’t made their grand opening yet when I went there. They’re not entirely new, though. Huh? The story was that they just moved the location from Somerset Apartment’s penthouse to the ground floor. So it’s ‘new’ in term of space that they’re occupying now since August, which gives the restaurant a direct access to Jalan Prof. Dr. Satrio.

Den-1

From a glance look over the whole space, the restaurant nicely divided into few areas. Major divider are the indoor VS the outdoor section; There are the outdoor space for the smoking area and the indoor space for the non-smoking area.

I definitely like what they’ve done with the indoor area. The indoor area holds two levels, and maybe because the ceiling is too high, the AC couldn’t really cover the whole space. So a forewarning: it could be a bit warm inside.

The waiter said that they’re still building the menu, which explains the limited options they have for now.

And here’s what I picked out from the menu: Farfalle Tuna (70K)

Farfalle Tuna

The tangy Bloody Mary Sauce was fresh and goes smoothly with the tuna. Overall, my mouth was really happy with the bow-tie pasta shape, while my belly said that it could hold some more. Or maybe I was just really hungry at the time? Hmmm… Honestly, I think it’s leaning towards the last one hehehe… Anyway, the portion was OK I’ll say, although my friend couldn’t finish theirs. Claiming that it’s rather too big for them.

Spaghetti Chicken Alfredo

The Spaghetti Chicken Alfredo (70K) that my friend ordered was really creamy. It’s almost as perfect as mine, but nothing that a kick of black pepper couldn’t fix. Overall, we both really enjoy our meal here.

And the verdict is… *drum rolls* … I definitely like The DEN! It’s a great place where you could hang out with your friends in the cabana outside or maybe go indoor to share a romantic dinner with your date.
Plus, the service was also great. I had one too many snob waiters that could really ruin the mood for the place, but nothing like it here.
I’ll say enjoy it while you can as this place haven’t been known to many people yet. Once they finally do the grand opening, I bet the flock will make a bee line to go here.

Keep it up, Kalaha!

Kunstkring Bakery & Coffee Corner

KUNSTKRING

Best place for me to find my muse? Cafe, because sometimes inspirations are hard to find from home. So come weekend, the cafe will be my ‘office’. As long as the place offers free Wi-Fi, plenty of electric sockets, and not overly crowded, then I’m good. *insert smiley face here*

One of my favorite places for the weekend’s office is this small bakery at the corner of Kunstkring Art Gallery. Most people will overlook this place when they came here and gone straight to the fine dining restaurant. Lucky for me, because it means that there will not be many people around. Not crowded [check].

KUNSTKRING

The small bell above the door will jingle whenever someone made their entrance, alerting the waitresses. Next, the pungent jasmine aromatherapy will invade your nostrils as you stepped into the bakery. Personally I love the scent that make me feels immediately at home. Fair warning, though, that the perfume could be rather overwhelming at times for those with sensitive nose. Their playlist ranging from French café music lounge to Michael Buble and Diana Krall, which complete the whole relaxing ambiance for me. Homey, cozy, and I’ll just let the clock run for hours as I work here.

KUNSTKRING

My favorite from the short menu they have here will be the Afogato. The vanilla ice cream on espresso is a perfect mix of sweetness and coffee for me. It falls under their coffee selection, but I like to think of it as a dessert. Whenever a red cherry is involves in your menu, then it’s a dessert!

KUNSTKRING

Another plus for me is that how the waitress here is pretty laid back with the customers. Translation: they will not hover over your shoulders even if you’ve linger for hours and only ordered once from the menu. They totally don’t seem to mind.

Dancing Crab

Seafood! Love, love, love ’em! It’s the kind of food that could rarely go wrong for a picky eater like me. Crab? Love ’em to death! It’s closely follows with clams and squids next on my list. These past couple of years, there’s a new seafood recipes cooking aside from the Indonesian or Chinese style that I’ve been so used to. I’m not sure which restaurant that came up with the style first, but this Louisiana cooking style has definitely cites a hype around the town. Curious? Definitely, I am!

The first time I went to this place was unplanned. It’s one of the spur of moments’ decision driven by hunger. I just realized that it was that type of restaurant when I read on their menu.

The main show here is on how the food is serves. First, you’re going to have all your food right on the table. Forget the plate, and all eating cutlery. Well the crab cracker is an optional. Second, wear your apron. Get it on right and you’re ready for the ride.

The seafood combo bag is a good choice if you don’t know which one to pick and just want to try all the seafood they have to offer in one shot. There are two varieties to choose from that compiles of the prawns, mussels, clams, potato, corn, and sausages in one bag. The difference between these two options is only the crab; the first combo has it, while the second doesn’t.

When you’ve made your choice, next you will be asked to pick for the sauce. There are four to choose from: their signature sauce with three level of spiciness ranging from mild to extra spicy, Beurre Blanc, Herb Butter, and Zesty Garlic Butter.

I went with the Signature Sauce (mild) for the Alaskan King Crab Legs and Beurre Blanc Sauce for the White Clams. The winner? Beurre Blanc sauce. The white creamy sauce with a sprinkle of white wine was heaven on earth for my taste buds. This type of sauce is finger licking delicious! It literally made my tongue to sing and definitely made a spot on my food of comfort list.

For the side dish, I ordered Truffle Fries, which also a winner for me! One portion is not enough, so I must have more and that’s how I ended up with the second basket. It’s salty and garlicky, which mesh really well with all the sauces.

All in all, this first encounter was beyond satisfactory. If it’s all about the food, then I’ll be grinning from ear to ear. The only downside is the price. Price wise they are quite on the mid-end. But it definitely didn’t stop me from making a comeback, because I just cannot resist the temptation of the Beurre Blanc sauce that keeps calling me for more.
